Sleep Apnea/Snoring

Sleep Apnea/Snoring

Generally thought of as harmless, snoring is a serious problem. It disturbs your partner, and unconsciously, it's disturbing you. Additionally, snoring has been found to affect your overall health, putting patients at risk for heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. Dr. Nielsen may be able to help. Working with your doctor, we can create a dental appliance to wear while sleeping that can help open the airways and let you get the sleep you need.

Why am I snoring?

Many of our patients assume their snoring is an inherited and harmless trait. It very well may come from inherited factors, but it is not harmless. Most commonly found in men with extra weight, it can be a condition experienced by anyone at any stage in their life. Additional problems such as heartburn or nasal allergies can make the long-term health issues even worse. At TruDental Spokane, we understand that chronic snoring is a serious problem that requires treatment in order to promote a good sleeping pattern for you and your loved ones.

There are many reasons that you may snore. A few of the most common include:

  • Allergies
  • Excessive weight
  • Deviated septum
  • Thicker than normal palate
  • Enlarged tonsils
  • Longer uvula
  • Excessive alcohol consumption

Where does the snoring sound come from?

Snoring occurs when there is an obstruction in the back of your throat. This obstruction causes the air to not be able to move freely causing a vibration in the tissues in the back of your mouth and nose. The resulting sound of the vibration is snoring.

Am I snoring?

Most patients are told that they have issues with snoring from their partners or housemates, but there are also some physical signs you can look for to let you know if snoring is affecting the quality of your sleep. Symptoms like:

  • Chronic fatigue during the day
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Chronic sore throat
  • Overall feeling worse when you wake than the night before

all may be signs that snoring could be to blame. Snoring frequently causes patients to wake up multiple times throughout the night, whether they are aware of it or not. This affects the quality of sleep, making functioning during the daytime difficult.
