Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in many foods and in water. Every day, minerals are added to and lost from your tooth's enamel layer through demineralization and remineralization. Demineralization (loss of minerals) occurs when plaque bacteria and sugars in the mouth attack the enamel. Remineralization occurs when minerals such as fluoride, calcium, and phosphate are redeposited to the enamel from the foods and water consumed. Too much demineralization and not enough remineralization leads to tooth decay.
Fluoride helps to prevent tooth decay by making your teeth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque and sugar. It can also reverse decay in its earliest stages. In children under six, fluoride becomes incorporated into the development of their permanent teeth, making it harder for acids to demineralize the teeth. Fluoride can also speed up remineralization and disrupt acid production in the teeth of children and adults.
At TruDental Spokane, we recommend supplemental fluoride applications in our office for patients who are vulnerable to decay. This includes children as well as adults who suffer from such conditions as dry mouth, gum disease and a history of frequent cavities. These treatments contain a much higher level of fluoride than what you will receive from toothpaste or mouth rinses. The process which involves painting a fluoride varnish on to the teeth is fast and painless and can be done as part of your regular checkup.
If you believe you and your family could benefit from supplemental fluoride applications, give us a call today at (509) 593-3033 to schedule an appointment.
